California Kiteboarding

California Kiteboarding is located in the heart of downtown Pismo Beach, California.  Although specializing in equipment for the sport of kiteboarding, they also are a great resource for Stand Up Paddleboards.  In fact, Jason Lee at Calif Kiteboarding sold me my two Naish SUP boards.  They also carry other gear such as paddles, helmets, vests, etc.  Jason has some demo boards and often he can be found at Addie Street beach south of Pismo Beach Pier giving surfers a chance to try out his new boards.  Drop by and give this great sport a try.

WHAT IS OPERATION SURF?
Amazing Surf Adventures (ASA) and the Richard Schmidt Surf School host the annual wounded warriors surf program for soldiers from the Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio Texas. Operation Surf takes place in different locations such as Pismo Beach/Avila Beach, CA and Santa Cruz, CA. Other destinations we look to be are Ventura, CA; San Diego, CA; and internationally such as Puerto Rica and Costa Rica.

ASA, along with several prominent surf schools, have developed an adaptive surf program to allow these soldiers to experience the thrill of surfing in a safe, constructive, land and ocean environment. We begin this program with comprehensive instruction on land that includes ocean safety, ocean awareness, equipment use, and adaptive techniques that cater to each individual’s disabilities.

They then take the soldiers into the ocean to put into action the instruction they’ve just received on land. While in the water each participant is assigned a professional adaptive surf instructor to maintain a safe 1:1 student-teacher ratio. In addition each instructor will also have two trained assistants placed in the water at various distances in the participants surf zone as additional safety buffers.

This process creates a surfing experience that is based upon proven teaching methods created by legendary watermen Richard Schmidt (Santa Cruz, CA) and Van Curaza (Pismo Beach, CA).

Below are videos from the 2009 and 2010 Operation Surf programs:

Central Coast Surfboards

Central Coast Surfboards in San Luis Obispo (55 Marsh Street) was founded by Mike Chaney and two other fellow surfers.  It has a great selection of boards, wetsuits and appeal.  Also has some winter sports equipment and clothes.

SLO Coast Kayaks

Located at Avila right on the seawall at the Old San Luis Pier, SLO Coast Kayaks is your best bet for rental Kayaks and Stand Up Paddleboards (SUP).  Whether you are a beginner or an expert recreational sea kayaking or SUP enthusiast, their goal is to give you the opportunity to explore the incredible, diverse and beautiful Central Coast ocean environment. They accomplish this goal by offering a safety conscious atmosphere and an unforgettable and affordable experience. Along with rental, they offer guided tours and lessons.  Stop by and say hi to Vince and join in on the fun.

St. Thomas Surf Shops

While in St. Thomas in April 2011 there was very little surf.  Only surf visible when I was there was at Hull Bay.  A long paddle out since the spot is on private property.  Waves were 3 to 5 foot.

The island is a good spot for Stand Up Paddle Boarding (SUP).  Equipment is available at most of the resorts and from a number of vendors on the island.

While on St. Thomas, I did have the opportunity to visit several local surf shops.

The Caribbean Surf Company has three locations in St. Thomas.  The offer a huge variety of boards, appeal and glasses.

Evolution Surf Shop is a small, mostly apparel, store in Red Hook.

It was an adventure in itself finding West Indies Wind Surfing Surf Shop.  Situated near Red Hook at the ending of a narrow, winding, sometimes dirt, road.  The shop specializes in wind surfing, kite surfing and SUP.  I had wanted to take some kite surfing lessons, but the wind was too strong.  Maybe next time.
